52 lakh abandone cows
Since cattle can not be sold for ancillary uses of meat and leather, owners are abandoning them on the streets.
Geetanjali writes, “Experts estimate that land equivalent of 17,200 football fields would be needed to accommodate all of UP’s abandoned cattle.”
It takes INR 80 to INR 100 per day to feed a cow.
Saving crops:
It costs INR 70,000 to install blade wire fence to ward off animals.
Farmers are losing upto INR 5,00,000 per acre due to the menace.
Private cow shelters are charging INR 1600 per cow.
How can cow shelters make money:
Beejom’s project Dung Ho is developing different products from cow waste such as compost, dung logs, incense sticks and flower pots made from compressed cow dung.
Shelters can produce bio gas. By investing INR 5,00,000, a shelter with 100 heads of cattle would be able to generate electricity to the value of Rs 4,38,000 per year.
