Hobbies are independent businesses in disguise
Internet allows hobby-entrepreneurs to build businesses with just 1000 users or fans. 17 million creators earned nearly $7 billion in income from their independent creations in 2017.
Wired editor Kevin Kelly wrote, “A thousand customers is a whole lot more feasible to aim for than a million fans. Millions of paying fans is not a realistic goal to shoot for, especially when you are starting out. But a thousand fans is doable. You might even be able to remember a thousand names. If you added one new true fan per day, it’d only take a few years to gain a thousand.”
Lockdown has fastened the shift. Hobbyists are converting art, fitness, music, dance, cooking, baking and their passions into businesses. They use tools and platforms such as Substack, Patreon, Instagram, Youtube, Podia, Teachable, Wix, Google Keen.
Two Indian startups helping creators to launch their businesses are Smolcoach and Scrollstack. Smolcoach helps in creating online video courses. It integrates Zoom with the payment options. Scrollstack allows writers to create paid newsletters for the audience. It integrates Substack like service along with payment options.
