Who becomes a chowkidar?

• Maximum chowkidars do manned guarding. The minimum wage is INR 18,000 per month. Two thirds of the chowkidars earn less than INR 10,000.

• A typical guard starts the work between the age of 15–19 years old. They fall below the poverty line, without the formal education.

• Most individuals come in search of employment to urban centres and resort to working as security guards as the last option.

• 6 Key regions from where manpower is sourced include Bihar,Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Assam.

• The youth associate the security industry with lack of social security schemes, long working hours and poor working conditions.

How big is the security industry?

• FICCI reports that it was an INR 57,000 crore industry in 2016.

• By 2020 it will become an INR 99,000 crore industry.

• It currently employs 85 lakh people, which it will double to 1.5 crore people.

• Only 25% of the industry is formal. Rest of the players are informal small players.
