India runs on tea, because there are tea stalls, vendors or tea labourers everywhere. Scroll reported how people from a Rajasthan village migrate to Mumbai, to become tea sellers. There are 12000 tea labourers in Mumbai.
In 1993 Purjilal migrated to Mumbai from Dungarpur in Rajasthan. He was 15 years old, and had dropped out of the school.
He spent the first few years washing glasses for 16 hours every day for a salary of Rs 100. He shared a room with five others. In 2018 he has graduated to prepare tea. He still works for 18 hours a day for a salary of INR 8,000/ month.
In 2018, a tea labourer gets a daily wage of INR 200 per day.Price of one cup tea has risen from 20 paise to INR 6 rupees. Yet, tea labourers barely graduate to become tea stall owners.
Modern tea houses, such as Chaayos and Chai Point are roping in investments. Tata also launched Cha, a tea cafe chain in 2017. India’s cafe business is worth INR 2500 crores.
