Food services industry does not treat its workers right
Zomato and Swiggy are not only ones exploiting workers. Restaurant industry has been exploiting the workers before cloud kitchens and food delivery revolution. In US restaurant workers are quitting at record rate.
Low pay, unreliable hours, no benefits and rude customers are common features of restaurant industry across the world. More than 700,000 workers quit restaurant industry in May, 2021. Wages in the restaurant industry have stagnated.
Lockdown made them introspect. As per NPR: In those rare quiet moments, millions of restaurant workers like Cornett found themselves thinking about the realities of their work. Breaks barely long enough to use the restroom or smoke a cigarette. Meals inhaled on the go. Hostile bosses, crazy schedules and paltry, stagnant pay.
