India’s famous tech sector has ignored 8 crore pedal powered cycle and rickshaw owners of India. The race is to produce electric scooters, cars, and buses. Urban planners suggest cycle highways and dedicated cycling paths for healthier and safer cities.
The bottom 20% moves on the bicycle. Top 10% of the country owns 46% of the cars and 22% of the two-wheelers. In 2016 11% of India’s households owned cars, 36% owned two-wheelers and 58% owned bicycles. According to CSE, India has 167 total motor vehicles per 1000 people. For everyone to own a car, India has to reach above 500 total motor vehicles per 1000 people. India does not have the per capita income of UK/ USA/ Japan/ Australia. Public transport and non-motorised transports such as cycling and walking are doable.
Gursaurabh Singh’s latest invention makes cycling as easy as riding a bike. His retrofitted a battery in the normal bicycles and rickshaws, In one charge, a cycle can travel upto 40 kms. It travels at a speed of 25 kilometres per hour. The attachment is fireproof and waterproof. One can also manually ride the cycle, to recharge more than 50% of the battery. The battery also allows recharging the phone with a USB charger.
