Kalpane connects local businesses with the global audience

PM Modi’s call for ‘vocal for local’ isn’t a bad thing, as the focus may shift to small businesses. In the past government policies had favoured big busineses. In 2020 the government procured goods and services worth INR 4203cr from micro and small enterprises(MSE). E-commerce giants also set up exclusive stores for artisans and craftsmen.
Kalpane was vocal for local before PM Modi asked for it. It curates designer products from the small and independent businesses. Brands such as Lacuna Studio Goa sell their products on Kalpane. Nikita Sethi founded Kalpane in 2017. In the past she had worked as fashion stylist. She saw the gap for luxury products at affordable prices.
Nitkia said in an interview to StartupsIndia, “Luxury as per our philosophy lies in the consumer experience of the product. Products that are meticulously hand-crafted using age-old artisanal techniques, made in small batches, using exquisite craftsmanship qualify as luxury products. We don’t define luxury as producing similar looking products and selling them at extremely high prices in fancy malls.”
Kalpane’s vision is to sell Indian products to the rest of the world. This model of ‘vocal for local’ will benefit the Indian small businesses. At the same time India should also import great local products from abroad such as Mountain Bikes, which created a sport category.
