Teams should avoid using group chat apps for collaborating.
Jason Fried writes:
Group chat is like being in an all-day meeting with random participants and no agenda.
Whatsapp, Facebook Work, Signal, Messenger, Telegram have become the tools to manage work, small businesses and projects. Though, they are helpful in short term, they are more harmful in long term.
First positive points:
Exchange ideas quickly.
Red alerts for customers and businesses.
Having fun 24/7.
A sense of community.
Negative points:
Mental fatigue due to constant flow of messages.
ASAP culture; people feel responsible for responding all the time.
Fear of missing out forces people to use the apps throughout the day.
Incomplete thoughts; people do not get time to think.
Knee-jerk responses are common in chat room, as it is always on the go.
Over-informing in real time. It takes away the most important resource; attention.
