Theobroma’s founder Kainaz could not work as chef. She had injured her back. She took her mom’s business, and grew it into a bakery chain. ICICI Ventures invested INR 100 crores.
Mom Kamal Merchanht ran a cake and dessert business from home. In 2004 they opened their first store in Colaba, Mumbai. Theobroma has grown to 50 stores with 1,000 employees across Mumbai, Delhi and Pune. It’s annual revenue was INR 120 crore.
Kainaz shares, “By our calculations, we needed a sale of Rs 22,000 per day to break even. Mum clung to the words of our architect Parvez Chavda, the one person who told her not to worry and who anticipated there would be a queue outside. He was right.”
By 2025 Theobroma aims for the annual sales of INR 500 crore. It plans to open 150 stores and grow the employee strength to 3,000 by serving 20 lakh customers.
