Craftsmen
Craftsmen are disappearing
Fewer and fewer younger people are picking up trades such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry. Lack of earning opportunities is the single biggest reason. There will be crisis if craftsmen are not available in the future.
Ethan James has been a carpenter for more than 20 years. He started working when he was 13. At the age of 36 he had to leave the profession he loved. He had to undergo knee surgery. He started making YouTube videos about wood working and carpentry. The new career pays him more than the profession he trained for years.
In his latest video he shared the reasons why it is difficult to find carpenters. The three key reasons were the low pay bracket. A carpenter gets only $30-$40 an hour, while a plumber can charge $75 an hour. While there is a shortage of new carpenters, the wage is going down. Three, it is not considered a skilled job, while it takes years to learn.
