It’s in the middle of the city. It is not feasible to manufacture cars.
Suzuki has requested for land in neighbouring Manesar.
Why is it a news?
It was here that Maruti manufactured its first car for India in 1983.
At first it produced 50,000 cars per year. Now it produces 7.5 lakh cars.
The success of Maruti brought other car companies such as Ford, Toyota, Honda, General Motors to India.
It developed the vendor ecosystem, which became billion dollar businesses. Some key names are Sona Koyo, Minda and Lumex.
What will happen to the factory?
It will still be producing engines. Producing cars will happen in Manesar.
Company will use the premises for testing.
It will take four to five years for the process.
