As a journalist Jatin Singh saw how difficult it was to source weather data, and use it. So, he chucked his job, and started Skymet in 2003. It was India’s first private weather forecasting company. Before 2003 weather data was only available from 145 year old IMD. It gave data as photocopies. Users found it cumbersome and difficult to use it.
At first Skymet sourced its data from IMD and generated graphs. It did not forecast weather. Today it is India’s go to forecaster. Its first few clients were television channels.Today Skymet forecasts weather for more than 7500 Indian locations and more than 2 lakh international locations. Its accuracy is more than 90%.
Jatin had bootstrapped Skymet with INR 1 lakh. By 2013–14 its revenue was INR 9.48 crores, and employed more than 250 people. He also raised funding worth more than INR 30 crores. In 2016 he founded Gram Cover, a rural insurance company. It has already served 1.9 lakh clients.
