Can Oakter change India’s perception as that of low quality technology products? Lack of scale, corruption, low productivity, subsidies, bad infrastructure are some of the reasons for the failure. India imports 40% of its annual consumption.
Noida based Oakter specialises in making internet of things (IOT) products such as home automation and home improvement products. Its home automation products include smart switches, which uses WiFi. Oakter’s Mini UPS can keep powering the WiFi during a power outage for upto 3 hours. Homeowners can automate their 3 bedroom, hall, kitchen (3BHK) at a cost of INR 60,000 to INR 90,000. It recently launched contactless sanitiser dispenser.
Oakter’s CEO Shishir Gupta said at the launch of Oakmist, “ It is empowering lakhs of customers in India. It is integrated with Amazon Echo and Google Home. We have the ambition to provide automation to 1 million Indian homes.”
The startup ecosystem is enabling hardware startups in India. Aerx Labs manufactures flight simulators. Klassic Klonec builds IOT enabled hydroponics. Skylark Drones makes drones. Phoenix Robotics work for environmental monitoring.
