Reliance does not just want to be country’s biggest telecom brand or petroleum brand or retail brand. It wants more, which will worry Amazon, Alibaba and Walmart.
Brief:
Amazon is acting like the world’s biggest monarch of 16th century. With their limitless capital Amazon had planned to disrupt Indian retail sector.
Alibaba has also plans to disrupt Indian retail. Their weapon is online to offline model.
Both have a capable competitor. Andy Mukherjee writes in Bloomberg that the battle is going to be between Amazon and Reliance.
Insight:
Reliance also has access to cheap capital as Amazon has. It also has a track record of building massive businesses. Jamnagar Refinery is amongst the world’s largest.
Reliance has invested $ 36bn into its telecom business. If it can influence the policy, and restrict foreign investments in the infrastructure, then Amazon will fight a loosing battle.
