Starbucks has a similar looking and sounding competitor in India. Sardarbuksh sounds similar. The logo also seems a copy of Starbucks’ mermaid.
Tell me more about Sardarbuksh:
In 2015 Sanmeet and Rohit started the first cafe in Gurugram. They invested just INR 10,000.
It has five outlets in Delhi-NCR; Hauz Khas, Kalkaji, Punjabi Bagh, Netaji Subhash Place, and Rajouri Garden. It aims to open 30 more. Franchise options are available.
They serve coffees, a mix of savory and sweet items. A chicken wrap and cold coffee cost Rs 350. The prices are approximately half of Starbucks.
Why did it bother Starbucks?
Starbucks found Sardarbuksh’s name to be “deceptively similar” to its own. After all, it is a local spin to a global brand.
It also felt that the logo was too close to its globally famous brand image.
Above things amount to infringement of trademarks. It may confuse the customers.
A legal case and future:
After Starbucks pointed out its case, Sardarbuksh changed the logo.
It did not satisfy Starbucks. So, it filed a legal case. New cafes may be called Sardarji Buksh.
The legal case has got the upstart publicity. As a result, its sales have gone up.
