World-over Indian cuisine is synonymous with butter chicken, tandoori chicken and dal makhni. Credit goes to Moti Mahal, a restauarant in Dariyaganj, Delhi.
Today there are numerous restaurants with the names such as Moti Mahal Deluxe and Moti Mahal Delux Tandoori Trail. So, which one is the original?
First there was just one:
First & only Moti Mahal opened in Dariyaganj in 1947. 3 Founders started it. However, the original restaurant is not with the founding families anymore.
In 1991 Vinod Chaddha bought it along with the rights to the name ‘Moti Mahal’.
That’s why there are variants of the name, but no Moti Mahal. The founding family did not stop, though.
One out of three founder moved out of the business. Two families continued opening chains.
