Pakoda QSRs
India is missing the next big food revolution
India is missing the next big food revolution
Business experts and economists had slammed PM Modi for his pakoda remarks. What pakodas are to India, fast food is to the west.
Pakodas are generic Indian snack. There are more than 100 types of pakodas. Before Mcdonald’s popularized hamburger, it was a street food. Before Autogrill popularized sandwiches, it was a street food. Same with tacos and burritos. All of the 50 most popular fast food brands sell snack and food items similar to pakodas. Quick service restaurants in USA are worth $273bn.
Economist Vivek Kaul wrote, “Zero was a useful invention, pakodanomics isn’t. It’s better to get rid of it as soon as possible and concentrate on the real problem of creating the right environment which will help the real entrepreneurs create genuine employment opportunities for India’s youth.”
The problem is not people selling pakodas. It is about turning pakodas into quick service restaurants (QSR) or fast food outlets such as India’s first samosa QSR. QSR sector in India is worth $7bn. It has the potential to grow as big as USA’s $273bn.
