Practice is as important as intuition in taking the key business decisions
Entrepreneurs should avoid only acting on their intuition. Intuition ignores the available data, which may reveal biases and flaws. Young Golf player Bryson DeChambeau went against the traditional wisdom, and ranked second in golf rankings.
Bryson ranked at 34th in 2019. To get better he went against the conventional wisdom. It was about putting the ball in the hole, and not hitting far. Bryson picked up single plane swing. He built his muscle mass with a specific diet and workout. In 2020 he ranked 2nd and 1st in driving distance. He collects data using launch monitors and studying other successful athletes. Then he uses it to build his routine. Famous book ‘Money Ball’ tells how data changed baseball forever. Data helped pick the winners, and not athletic looking players.
Writer David Perrel writes, “You don’t reach a state of mastery when you know everything. You reach it when you’ve absorbed the knowledge so deeply that it becomes a part of you.“
Respect for science doesn’t mean intuition doesn’t matter. Analytical approach will strengthen intuition. Independent businesses should look at studying the data about customers, industry and economy. It helps to know how less we know.
