Sree Annapoorna is city’s most prominent business
It started as a small canteen 68 years ago. Today it operates 20 outlets. The food quality at Sree Annapoorna serves as the benchmark for the restaurants in Tamil Nadu.
In early 1960s K Dhamodharasamy Naidu and his three brothers started a catering business. In 1968 they started Sree Annapoorna. It offered coffee, tea and tiffin items. It operates a central kitchen, which supplies food to all the restaurants. The kitchen also uses modern industrial machines and processes, unlike other Indian restaurant chains. It diversified into kitchen equipment manufacturing, construction, instant food mix production and bottling beverages. It’s annual turnover is between INR 100cr to INR 500cr.
Subha, a journalist wrote in Hindu: “Annapoorna is part of Coimbatore’s psyche. Unhappy customers do not just write in the complaint book, they also call us. It is their hotel, their brand,” says Jegan. Vivek gets his morning feedback at the Badminton Club, R.S. Puram, from the first batch of players who’ve already had their coffee. “We learn from complaints. Appreciation makes our day,” he says.
About 90% of India’s restaurants are unorganised and organised stand alone. Only 10% are chain restaurants. There is an opportunity for the smaller restaurants to grow into organised and chain restaurants.
