At Simplyfest Zorawar Kalra shared the secret of his entrepreneurial journey. He is the CEO of Massive Restaurants, which has the revenue of INR 220 crore.
He has built six restaurant brands, with twenty restaurants in six countries. The Popular brands are Farzi Cafe, Masala Bar, Pa Pa Ya and Made In Punjab.

Zorawar credits his father Jiggs Kalra (famous food columnist, author and restauratuerur) for instilling work ethics. His father had asked him to find something, he would do for free, and then figure out to make money from it. He also credits his grandmother for the food aesthetics.
In 2008 he started Punjab Grill with his father. It served authentic food from un-divided Punjab. Both also started Street Foods Of India.
In 2012 Zorawar launched Massive Restaurants, as he knew how to build successful restaurant brands. In the next five years, he is expecting Massive Restaurants to mop up revenues of ₹1,000 crore to ₹1,200 crore.
So, what’s the secret sauce
Zorawar’s secret is his relentless pursuit to redefine Indian food. He redefined Punjabi cuisine with Punjab Grill. It stayed away from excessive fat and spices.
Farzi Cafe redefined Indian food. It turned Indian food cool, casual and fun. Farzi Cafe is already a big hit in London and Dubai.
Masala Library is redefining ancient Indian food.
Zorawar’s tips for entrepreneurs
Think big. He suggests having a big goal in mind. He also encourages small restaurants to expand.
Avoid loan. His suggested to start with the angel or family money. Failure of a restaurant will make it difficult to return the debt.
Know you operating ratios. Entrepreneurs should know different cost heads, and avoid wastage.
Return on investment. Within two years a restaurant business should be able to recover the investment, or it should close down.
Hire smarter people. People who can challenge with their better knowledge and skills.
