E-rickshaws are everywhere in Delhi-NCR. They provide the last mile connectivity for people who ride buses and metro. Mint reports that India surged ahead of China in electricity vehicles revolution.
Brief:
India has 15 lakhs battery powered e-rickshaws/ three wheelers. 11,000 new e-rickshaws join the existing ones each month.
China has 13.5 lakhs batter powered vehicles. Majority of them are cars. India has only 6000.
Comparing oranges with mangoes:
Indian e-rickshaws are unsafe, rickety and rudimentary. No government body regulates them or ensures quality such as ISI for food. If it meets accidents, passengers may get injured badly.
China is competing with the best auto brands of the world such as Tesla, Ford, GM and BMW. None of our car brands are manufacturing electric cars like Chinese brands such as Faraday and NIO.
Insight:
Every government failure creates an opportunity such as mosquito repellent industry, private security industry, water cleaning industry, diesel powered generators and now e-rickshaws.
Lack of pubic transport is already affecting the local economies of the country. Unless we focus on the overall problem, these failures in the disguise of success won’t help
