Indian housewives are using mobiles and social media platforms to launch their home based businesses
India’s labour force participation for women is amongst the lowest in the world. Women do not feel safe, when they go to school or go to work. Thanks to technology platforms such as Meesho and WhatsApp, stay at home women are starting their own businesses.
As per Asian Review: Wadhwa is one of the nearly 2.5 million resellers working with Meesho, a 4-year-old e-commerce company that connects small, local manufacturers of clothing, accessories and homeware to individuals — usually women — who then act as agents to sell the products through their own social networks.
The profit margin on the product is split between the reseller, the e-commerce company and the manufacturer. A seller can earn between INR 4000 to INR 15,000 per week. Mores successful resellers also have their YouTube channels.
Meesho and Whatsapp have competition from similar businesses such as Marsplay, Simsim, Bulbul. More platforms means more opportunities for women to start businesses from the home.
