Job titles do not matter in local businesses
Local business owners do not need titles such as president or director. It sends the wrong signals to consumers and business partners. For hierarchy to exist, there should be one existing.
Gokul Rajaram, a senior level professional at Doordash wrote:
Every CEO I know laments how they need to instill a stronger sense of urgency in their company around every single thing, to get things done faster.
However, there is one very important thing they should have zero urgency around.
In fact, they should try to delay it as much as possible; ideally, forever.
I’m talking about titles. Specifically, Director-level and higher (Senior Director, VP, SVP) titles.
A business with less than 10 or 100 employees do not require titles. Earning titles becomes the motivator than the work of the employee. People use titles to assert power and influence. It disrupts the work culture. Every worker wants a fancier title. People do not want to give up titles with the new role or responsibility.
Gokul offers a simple guide. Give descriptive titles for individual creators such as ‘business development executive’ or ‘product marketing manager’. Use the word lead instead of manager: sales lead or marketing lead.
